January 19-23

Hello Families,

We started the week by learning about the letter N and what sound it makes. We practiced writing the letter N in our fine motor journals as well. Let me tell you some words that begin with the letter N!  We read stories about newts and narwhals.  We especially liked reading the story "Narwhal makes a sandwich".  We learned how to draw our own narwhal in our writing journals.

Next, we practiced hearing the different sounds between the letters M and N by doing an M/N sort. We cut out different pictures of things that start with M or N. To sort, we said the word and then asked our friends what shape our mouth was in (closed lips or open) to help us decide where the picture should go.  N and M sound and look a little bit similar- so it was helpful to practice and notice the difference with our mouth shape.  We have continued to practice listening for rhyming words, counting syllables and blending sounds to make words during our phonics times.

We read the story Sneezy the Snowman to practice our sequencing skills this week. We cut out and glued the different pictures of the ways the children in the story helped warm up Sneezy the Snowman. Ask me to tell you all about the story.

We finished the week by practicing the number 8 and representing it in different ways in our math journals. We read a
story about an Octopus Escape and discovered new facts about Octopuses.  We know octopuses have 3 hearts, 8 legs and blue blood.  They can also camouflage and shoot ink to protect themselves.  We love learning animal facts together.

Our PM class were excited to have Big Buddies this week- especially since it was too cold to go outside and play on our Fun Friday. We played a few of our favourite math games together- practicing turn taking, subtilizing, writing numbers, and one to one correspondence.  We always love to see our Big Buddies!  Our PM classes worked on creating their Art cards as well.

During centre times we built with new building toys, made playdoh cupcakes, explored magnets in the rice bin, created structures with big blocks, painted and coloured.

Next week Provincial Assessments continue. I will be in the building working with individual students to complete these assessments on several days, but there will be a guest teacher in the classroom during these times.
